Ghana Takes Delivery of New Train for Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line

Ghana’s transport infrastructure has received a major boost following the official handover of a brand-new state-of-the-art train, specifically assembled in Poland for operations on the strategic Tema-Mpakadan railway line.

The delivery marks a crucial milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s railway sector, ease traffic congestion on major highways, and facilitate the efficient movement of both goods and passengers across the Eastern Corridor.

Boosting the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line Operations

Transport authorities confirmed that the newly arrived diesel multiple unit (DMU) underwent rigorous testing and quality assurance checks in Europe before being shipped to Ghana. The Tema-Mpakadan line is designed to connect the port city of Tema to Mpakadan in the Asuogyaman District, opening up critical economic corridors.

Stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector have welcomed the development, noting that an operational rail system will significantly reduce the heavy haulage pressure currently experienced on major trunk roads. It is also expected to lower transportation costs for traders and agricultural producers.

Enhancing Public Transport and Economic Growth

As the country continues to invest heavily in public infrastructure, the integration of modern rail transport is seen as a catalyst for regional trade and industrialization. The Tema-Mpakadan line will not only provide a safe, reliable, and comfortable commuting alternative for citizens but also link key commercial zones directly to the main port hub.

Further announcements regarding commissioning schedules, ticketing systems, and operational timetables are expected from the Ministry of Railways Development and the Ghana Railway Company Limited in the coming weeks as trial runs commence.
