Strengthening Accountability in Ghana’s Resource Sector
The Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) has officially announced a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources aimed at improving Ghana mining reporting across mainstream and digital media platforms.
This collaboration comes at a critical time when the country is intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining—locally known as *galamsey*—while promoting sustainable and responsible large-scale mining practices. The partnership seeks to equip journalists with the technical knowledge required to report accurately on complex environmental, financial, and regulatory issues.
Building Capacity for Economic Journalists
According to leadership from both bodies, the initiative will feature specialized training workshops, field trips to mining sites, and stakeholder forums. These programs are designed to bridge the information gap between state regulators, mining companies, and the general public.
Accurate Ghana mining reporting is vital for ensuring transparency in revenue mobilization, environmental protection, and community development. With the new framework in place, journalists will have better access to verified data regarding concession allocations, environmental impact assessments, and royalty disbursements.
A Commitment to Sustainable Development
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources commended IFEJ for its dedication to professional journalism, noting that the media plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse around natural resource governance.
Stakeholders are optimistic that this alliance will foster a more informed citizenry, ultimately driving better policy decisions and sustainable economic growth for the country.
