Governor Eno Breaks Ground on Ibom International Market to Boost Akwa Ibom Business Growth

Groundbreaking ceremony of the Ibom International Market in Akwa Ibom State

Driving Economic Prosperity in Akwa Ibom

In a bold move to transform commercial activities and bolster small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the region, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-billion naira Ibom International Market. Designed to be a modern commercial hub, the project aligns with the state’s broader economic blueprint to create jobs, attract direct investments, and ease the cost of doing business in Uyo and its environs.

Speaking at the project site, Governor Eno emphasized that infrastructural development remains a cardinal pillar of his administration’s ‘ARISE Agenda’. The market is projected to host thousands of lock-up shops, modern warehouses, cold rooms, banking facilities, and robust security architecture to safeguard traders and investors alike.

Modernizing Trade and Empowering Local Entrepreneurs

The establishment of the Ibom International Market comes at a critical time when state governments across Nigeria are aggressively seeking alternative revenue streams and expanding their economic bases away from federal allocations. Business analysts in Lagos, Abuja, and Uyo have lauded the initiative, noting that structured trading hubs are vital for reducing logistics bottlenecks and integrating local farmers and manufacturers into broader national supply chains.

  • Job Creation: The construction and eventual operation of the market are expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for artisans, laborers, traders, and logistics providers.
  • Security and Infrastructure: Unlike traditional open-air markets, this facility will feature advanced fire-fighting systems, CCTV surveillance, and waste management plants.
  • An inclusive allocation policy is reportedly in place to ensure that indigenous traders and cooperative societies receive preferential access to shop spaces.

Scaling Up Akwa Ibom’s Investment Appeal

With neighboring states like Lagos, Abuja, and Abia ramping up their own internal innovation and commercial pipelines, Akwa Ibom is positioning itself as the premier trade and investment destination in the South-South region. Stakeholders have urged the state government to ensure timely completion of the project, pointing out that continuity and maintenance will be key to sustaining the market’s long-term viability.

As construction begins in earnest, local business owners and investors are advised to liaise with the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Trade and Investment for allocation guidelines and partnership opportunities as the state marches toward unprecedented economic expansion.
