Ghana Expands Free SHS Infrastructure to Tackle Rising Enrollment in Secondary Schools

The Ministry of Education in Ghana has announced an aggressive push to complete stalled and ongoing infrastructure projects under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy. This strategic move is designed to address the surging student population and eliminate congestion in classrooms and dormitories across the country.

Tackling the Infrastructure Deficit in Secondary Schools

Since the introduction of the flagship educational program, secondary school enrollment figures have witnessed unprecedented growth. While the policy has successfully expanded access to thousands of children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, it has equally placed immense pressure on existing institutional facilities. According to education ministry officials, accelerated construction works are currently underway to deliver new classroom blocks, science laboratories, and multi-use dormitories.

Speaking at a recent stakeholder engagement in Accra, representatives emphasized that infrastructural expansion remains a top priority for sustainable educational development. The government is working closely with the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to ensure that contractors return to site and deliver quality projects on schedule.

Improving the Quality of Teaching and Learning

Beyond physical expansion, educational experts stress that adequate infrastructure is critical to improving learning outcomes. Reduced class sizes will allow teachers to pay closer attention to individual students, fostering a more interactive and productive academic environment.

Key Focus Areas of the Expansion Project

  • Dormitory Blocks: Relieving boarding pressure and accommodating rural students.
  • Science Laboratories: Equipping schools with modern practical tools for STEM education.
  • Assembly Halls: Providing communal spaces for school gatherings and co-curricular activities.

Parents, teacher unions, and school administrators have largely welcomed the renewed commitment, noting that timely delivery of these facilities will safeguard the long-term success of the Free SHS policy and elevate educational standards across Ghana.
